Aqua
Solvent, main base; microbial control is critical
Butylene Glycol
Polyol humectant and solvent at 1–5%; aids solubilization, light feel
Pentylene Glycol
Polyol humectant at 1-3%; low irritancy, suitable for sensitive skin
Glycerin
Workhorse humectant at 3–10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives
1,2-Hexanediol
Polyol solvent and preservative booster at 1–5%; light feel, can replace some traditional preservatives
Bifida Ferment Lysate
Bifida lysate for skin conditioning; low usage, suits sensitive skin
Ceramide NP
Ceramide N3 for barrier repair; lipophilic, needs oil phase or emulsion, avoid high standalone use.
Althaea Rosea Root Extract
Humectant rich in polysaccharides; soothes dry skin with mucilage
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract
Aloe vera leaf extract for soothing and humectant; monitor polysaccharide level and endotoxins
Betaine
Betaine for mild moisturizing/surfactant; low concentration 1-2% common, high may irritate.
Panthenol
Panthenol (vitamin B5) at 1–5%; moisturizing and reparative, supports barrier recovery
Allantoin
Skin soother at 0.5-2%; promotes cell regeneration
Sodium Hyaluronate
Potent humectant at 0.1–2%; different MW for penetration depth, high levels may draw moisture
SH-Oligopeptide-1
Synthetic short oligopeptide for skin conditioning; generally low irritancy and comedogenicity
Zanthoxylum Piperitum Fruit Extract
Zanthoxylum fruit extract for skin conditioning; contains capsaicinoids, watch for irritation.
Pulsatilla Koreana Extract
Herb-based aqueous extract for soothing and conditioning; low usage levels, no significant sensitization
Usnea Barbata Extract
Lichen extract; natural deodorant, contains usnic acid, for oral/body care, avoid dust inhalation.
Adenosine
Skin conditioner at 0.1-1%; used for anti-aging and repair
Arginine
Arginine for moisturizing/conditioning; amino acid, high biocompatibility, often used in blends.
Xanthan Gum
Natural thickener at 0.1–1%; provides gel texture, pH-stable, requires full hydration
Hydrogenated Lecithin
Emulsifier from lecithin; stable, used in powder emulsions
Polysorbate 20
Non-ionic emulsifier and cleansing surfactant; contains PEG, control microbial load.
Lecithin
Phospholipid emulsifier at 1-5%; biocompatible, moisturizing/antioxidant, prone to oxidation (add TBHQ), mild for sensitive skin.
