Glycolic acid for exfoliation; requires buffering at concentrations >10%, avoid combination with other acids.

Glyceryl Stearate

Emulsifier at 1-3%; may require acid to prevent saponification

PEG-100 Stearate

Non-ionic emulsifier, requires ionics for stability; check PEG for formaldehyde.

Neopentyl Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate

Light emollient ester for fast spreadability and a light feel.

Glycerin

Workhorse humectant at 3–10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives

Sorbitol

Polyol humectant with strong hygroscopy; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives; also a solvent or adjuster.

Sodium Hyaluronate

Potent humectant at 0.1–2%; different MW for penetration depth, high levels may draw moisture

Dimethicone

Silicone occlusive at 1–5%; provides smooth feel, non-penetrating, suitable for sensitive skin

Cyclomethicone

Volatile silicone for light feel; contains D4 restricted by EU, must be <0.1% after 2026

Ammonium Hydroxide

Strong alkaline pH adjuster; use in low concentrations to neutralize acids, avoid direct mixing with strong acids.

Cetyl Alcohol

Cetyl alcohol for emulsification/thickening; high concentration >10% may irritate.

Octyl Palmitate

Low-volatility ester for slip and sheen; moderate comedogenic risk, avoid high loads in acne-prone care.

Lactic Acid

AHA pH adjuster at 0.5-5%; exfoliation/humectancy, mild at low conc., irritating at high, avoid conflict with alkaline preservatives.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

Light occlusive and solvent at 1–10%; non-greasy feel, suitable for oily and combination skin

Linoleic Acid

Essential fatty acid for barrier repair and hydration; oxidizes easily, high levels may be comedogenic

Glycine Soja Sterols

Plant-derived emollient and conditioner; high purity and suitable for sensitive skin

Phospholipids

Biomimetic repair and emollient, mimics skin lipids; typically processed at low temps, may be sticky at high levels

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil

Sweet almond oil, light emollient; suitable for sensitive skin, caution for nut allergies.

Sorbitan Stearate

Non-ionic emulsifier for O/W systems; hydrophobic, requires co-emulsifiers, inert at high purity

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate

Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate for moisturizing/soothing; inhibits 5-LOX, water-soluble, for sensitive skin.

Hamamelis Virginiana Extract

Botanical extract for astringent and sebum control; mild irritation risk for sensitive skin at high concentrations.

Cucumis Sativus Fruit Extract

Botanical extract for conditioning; note extraction impact on active retention

Xanthan Gum

Natural thickener at 0.1–1%; provides gel texture, pH-stable, requires full hydration

Tocopherol

Natural antioxidant (vitamin E) at 0.1–1%; prone to oxidation, store protected from light

Ascorbyl Palmitate

Ascorbyl palmitate, lipophilic Vit C ester, antioxidant; oxidizes, needs light/air protection.

Ascorbic Acid

Vitamin C, potent antioxidant requiring acidic environment for stability; oxidizes and discolors easily, needs light and air protection, concentration 1-10%, pure L-ascorbic acid is more irritating.

Oryza Sativa Bran Oil

Rice bran oil rich in oryzanol and linoleic acid for conditioning; moderate comedogenic rating, mind oxidative stability.

Persea Gratissima Oil

Avocado oil rich in fatty acids and vitamin E; occlusive moisturizer, use with caution on oily skin.

Butyrospermum Parkii

African oil/fat/wax; clarify form (oil, butter, or powder) as function depends on it.

Magnesium Aluminum Silicate

Oil-absorbing powder at 5–20%; for pressed/powder makeup, high levels may feel heavy

Tocopheryl Acetate

Vitamin E derivative antioxidant at 0.1–1%; more stable than tocopherol, store protected from light

Retinol

Highly active and unstable, needs robust antioxidant encapsulation; 0.1-1.0%, pregnancy contraindicated

Citric Acid
