Aqua

Solvent, main base; microbial control is critical

Isododecane

Synthetic hydrocarbon solvent providing dry, silky skin feel; high volatility, non-comedogenic, common in sunscreens and foundations, usage 5-30%.

Cyclopentasiloxane

Cyclopentasiloxane for emollient/solvent; volatile silicone, smooth feel, check VOC regulations.

Undecane

Undecane; light aliphatic hydrocarbon emollient; high volatility, pair with occlusives, flammable

Trimethylsiloxysilicate

Silicate powder, oil-absorbing emollient; insoluble, high levels feel powdery.

Silica

Silica powder at 1–10%; absorbs oil, thickens, provides matte finish, for oil-control products

Talc

Inorganic mineral powder for texture and oil absorption; must be asbestos-free; fineness affects skin feel and safety, avoid inhalation.

Tridecane

Tridecane, a long-chain alkane acting as emollient and solvent; petrochemical-derived, inert and low toxicity.

Butylene Glycol

Polyol humectant and solvent at 1–5%; aids solubilization, light feel

Polymethylsilsesquioxane

Silicone polymer for emolliency, matte effect, and suspension; used in foundations or powder suspensions, typical usage 1-5%, smooth skin feel.

Caprylyl Methicone

Bis-isobutyl Peg/ppg-10/7/dimethicone Copolymer

Silicone/polyether copolymer for cleansing emulsification, contains PEG and silicone, subject to EU restrictions

Sodium chloride

Salt for gel viscosity control; used as precipitant in soaps

Polypropylsilsesquioxane

Propylsilsesquioxane, volatile silicone film former; smooths, low occlusion, very low comedogenic risk

Dimethicone Crosspolymer

Crosslinked silicone polymer providing silkiness and viscosity control; for hair and skin; inert but hard to biodegrade.

Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer

Crosslinked silicone thickener at 0.5-2%; silky/matte feel, non-comedogenic, partial oil phase incompatibility, use co-solvent/pre-emulsification.

PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone

PEG/PPG siloxane; emulsifier/thickener; low irrit, watch PEG total conc limits

Phenoxyethanol

Broad-spectrum preservative at ≤1%; may irritate sensitive eye areas, often paired with ethylhexylglycerin

Disteardimonium Hectorite

Inorganic ionic clay thickener at 0.25-1%; water/oil/solvent systems, rheology control, avoid strong acids, may affect active release.

Polyglyceryl-4 isostearate

Emulsifier at 1–5%; mild type, suitable for sensitive skin formulas

Benzyl Alcohol

Mild preservative/solvent at 0.5-1.0%; EU allergen (labeling required), irritation risk if concentrated, avoid in infant/highly sensitive skin.

Propylene carbonate

Inert solvent and viscosity modifier; often used as penetration enhancer, mild at low levels

Tocopheryl Acetate

Vitamin E derivative antioxidant at 0.1–1%; more stable than tocopherol, store protected from light

Parfum

Fragrance for scent; may contain allergens, caution for sensitive skin, full labeling required.

Benzyl salicylate

UV absorber/light stabilizer, restricted in EU; potential sensitizer, risk assessment needed.

Geraniol
