- Solvent, main base; microbial control is critical
- Alcohol Denat
- Denatured ethanol; solvent, penetration enhancer, and quick-dry agent; high % may compromise barrier in dry skin.
- Butylene Glycol
- Polyol humectant and solvent at 1–5%; aids solubilization, light feel
- Dimethyl Isosorbide
- Dimethyl isosorbide as solvent and viscosity control; low toxicity, common use
- Polysorbate 20
- Non-ionic emulsifier and cleansing surfactant; contains PEG, control microbial load.
- Caprylyl Glycol
- Polyol conditioner and preservative booster at 0.5–3%; emollient feel, often paired with 1,2-hexanediol
- Ricinus Communis Seed Oil
- Castor oil for heavy moisturization and film formation; high viscosity, high levels may be comedogenic, blend with other oils.
- Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Peel Oil Expressed
- Sweet orange peel oil; citrus scent; contains photosensitizing furanocoumarins, strictly limit in daytime products.
- Salicylic Acid
- Lipophilic BHA at 0.5-2%; exfoliant/sebum control, irritation/sensitization at high conc., photosensitivity (SPF needed), avoid sensitive/pregnant.
- Thymol
- Phenolic antimicrobial and fragrance; irritating at high levels, use trace amounts, allergen risk.
- Glycerin
- Workhorse humectant at 3–10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives
- Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil
- Rosemary leaf oil for fragrance and conditioning; essential oil, allergen risk, limit usage
- Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil
- Tea tree oil, antibacterial and sebum regulating; highly sensitizing at concentrate level, dilute; avoid on broken skin.
- Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract
- Aloe vera leaf extract for soothing and humectant; monitor polysaccharide level and endotoxins
- Alginic Acid
- High-viscosity thickener and gel former; viscosity drops in high pH, sensitive to electrolytes requiring dosage adjustment
- Zinc Sulfate
- Antimicrobial and astringent, restricted in oral care; <1% topical, metallic taste, avoid mixing with amino acids
- Benzoic Acid
- Preservative and pH adjuster at 0.1–0.5%; low water solubility, best in acidic media, irritant at high levels.
