Light ester, solvent and emollient, fresh feel and volatility, non-comedogenic.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide at 2–5%; improves texture, controls oil, brightens; high levels may cause sensitivity

Polymethylsilsesquioxane

Silicone polymer for emolliency, matte effect, and suspension; used in foundations or powder suspensions, typical usage 1-5%, smooth skin feel.

Diisopropyl Sebacate

Low-viscosity, high-flash-point ester; excellent spreadability, non-greasy feel

Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate

Novel UVB absorber at 0.2-1.5%; narrow band, requires combination, high photostability, verify regional limits, low irritation.

Ethylhexyl Triazone

UVB absorber with good photostability; formulated with other filters, typical concentration 3-5%, check compatibility with other ingredients.

Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol

UV stabilizer (UV-326/328) preventing photo-degradation of formulas; has EU concentration limit, used in sunscreens.

Coco-Caprylate/Caprate

Lightweight mid-chain ester, quick spreading, suitable for oily skin, non-comedogenic.

Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone

Tinosorb S UV filter for UVA; low skin irritancy, photostable, use in sun care formulations.

1,2-Hexanediol

Polyol solvent and preservative booster at 1–5%; light feel, can replace some traditional preservatives

Butylene Glycol

Polyol humectant and solvent at 1–5%; aids solubilization, light feel

Tranexamic Acid

Tranexamic acid for skin brightening; generally mild at low external doses.

Caprylyl Methicone

Volatile silicone, fresh feel, does not absorb oil, used in foundations and cushions.

Pentylene Glycol

Polyol humectant at 1-3%; low irritancy, suitable for sensitive skin

Behenyl Alcohol

Fat alcohol emulsifier/thickener at 1-3%; low comedogenic risk, check solubility in strong acid/base systems, add antioxidants.

Poly C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate

Synthetic thickener and emulsion stabilizer for gels or emulsions; generally inert to skin; watch residual monomers.

Glycerin

Workhorse humectant at 3–10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives

Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate

Non-ionic emulsifier at 1–3%; mild, easily combined with other surfactants.

Decyl Glucoside

Mild alkyl glucoside, biodegradable; foam stabilizer, thickens with fatty alcohols, low allergenicity.

Tromethamine

pH adjuster, alkaline; precise dosing required

Carbomer

Gelling thickener requiring neutralization; watch out for ion compatibility

Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer

Crosspolymer for thickening/film; needs neutralization to pH 7-8 to hydrate, check ion strength.

Panthenol

Panthenol (vitamin B5) at 1–5%; moisturizing and reparative, supports barrier recovery

Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate

Mild amino-acid surfactant, poor solubility, pairs with fatty alcohols, fine foam.

Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6

Water-soluble thickener; requires neutralizer, performs best at pH 5–7

Ethylhexylglycerin

Mild conditioner and preservative booster at 0.5–1%; reduces preservative load, smooth feel

Adenosine

Skin conditioner at 0.1-1%; used for anti-aging and repair

Xanthan Gum
