- Propanediol
- Polyol solvent at 1–5%; light feel, aids solubilization, propylene glycol alternative
- Alcohol Denat
- Denatured ethanol; solvent, penetration enhancer, and quick-dry agent; high % may compromise barrier in dry skin.
- Glycolic Acid
- Glycolic acid for exfoliation; requires buffering at concentrations >10%, avoid combination with other acids.
- Citric Acid
- Buffer and chelator at 0.1–2%; adjusts pH, may irritate sensitive skin at low pH
- Malic Acid
- AHA for pH buffering; mild at low conc, risk at high, control pH & total acidity
- Glycerin
- Workhorse humectant at 3–10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives
- Sodium Hydroxide
- Strong base neutralizer for pH adjustment; handle with extreme care
- Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice
- Natural humectant and soother with high water activity; requires preservative system, generally well-tolerated
- Citrus Grandis Fruit Extract
- Pomelo extract with astringent and skin-conditioning properties; contains phototoxic citrus components, assess risk for daytime use.
