Primary solvent and base; requires preservative system to prevent microbial growth

Glycerin

Workhorse humectant at 3–10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives

BG

Butylene glycol; humectant and solvent. Low irritancy, common in water-in-oil and oil-in-water formulas.

Diglycerin

Diglycerin humectant and conditioner; low viscosity suitable for liquid formulas, very low irritancy.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

Light occlusive and solvent at 1–10%; non-greasy feel, suitable for oily and combination skin

Pentylene Glycol

Polyol humectant at 1-3%; low irritancy, suitable for sensitive skin

Cetyl Ethylhexanoate

Synthetic oil providing slip; large molecule, low penetration, non-comedogenic, suitable for dry or rough skin.

Eucalyptus Leaf Extract

Eucalyptus leaf extract with eucalyptol; antimicrobial/cooling; some components may be allergenic, caution for sensitive skin.

Purslane Extract

Purslane extract with mucopolysaccharides; soothing/anti-inflammatory; low irritancy, good for sensitive skin, check microbial stability.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract, often used as natural preservative, but stability/durability questionable, needs conventional preservatives.

Ceramide NP

Ceramide N3 for barrier repair; lipophilic, needs oil phase or emulsion, avoid high standalone use.

Alanine

Amino acid for antistatic and conditioning; low irritation, slight salty taste at high levels

Arginine

Arginine for moisturizing/conditioning; amino acid, high biocompatibility, often used in blends.

Sodium Glutamate

Flavoring agent & humectant, food-grade, non-irritating, often used for masking.

Serine

Humectant amino acid, 1–3%; high water solubility, compatible with sensitive skin.

Proline

Proline, amino-acid humectant; boosts stratum corneum hydration, stable at pH 4-5.

Sodium Hyaluronate

Potent humectant at 0.1–2%; different MW for penetration depth, high levels may draw moisture

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate

Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate for moisturizing/soothing; inhibits 5-LOX, water-soluble, for sensitive skin.

Glycosyl Trehalose

Glycosylated trehalose to enhance skin tolerance and moisture retention; acts as a film former.

Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate

Humectant for hydration and film formation; 1-5%, monitor microbial contamination

PEG/PPG/Polybutylene Glycol-8/5/3 Glycerin

PEG/PPG polybutylene glycerin humectant; monitor PEG oxidation and stability.

Ethylhexylglycerin

Mild conditioner and preservative booster at 0.5–1%; reduces preservative load, smooth feel

Olive Fruit Oil

High-linoleic occlusive moisturizer; heavy texture, comedogenic risk for oily skin

Di Lauroyl Glutamate

Dilauroyl glutamate, mild amino acid surfactant for cleansing and emulsification; suitable for sensitive skin

Arachidyl Alcohol

Waxy emulsion stabilizer and thickener, often paired with cetearyl alcohol; heavy feel, good for creams

Behenyl Alcohol

Fat alcohol emulsifier/thickener at 1-3%; low comedogenic risk, check solubility in strong acid/base systems, add antioxidants.

Arachidyl Glucoside

Mild non-ionic emulsifier and emollient, PEG-free; co-soluble with stearoyl lactylates

Sodium Acrylate Grafted Starch

Grafted starch, biodegradable thickener; 1-5% usage, hygroscopic, requires preservation system.

Gellan Gum

Gellan gum; water-soluble polymer; gel former; high transparency, strong gelling, for aqueous phase stability.

Tocopherol

Natural antioxidant (vitamin E) at 0.1–1%; prone to oxidation, store protected from light

Citric Acid

Buffer and chelator at 0.1–2%; adjusts pH, may irritate sensitive skin at low pH
