Solvent, main base; microbial control is critical

Propylene Glycol

Polyol humectant at 3-10%; hygroscopic, slight tackiness, mild irritation at high conc., verify preservative efficacy, no allergen.

Pentylene Glycol

Polyol humectant at 1-3%; low irritancy, suitable for sensitive skin

Glycerin

Workhorse humectant at 3–10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives

Aesculus Hippocastanum Extract

Astringent/antioxidant for eye/sensitive formulas; contains saponins, use at 0.1–1% to avoid irritation.

Ammonium glycyrrhizate

Soothing anti-inflammatory and emulsifier; derived from licorice, minor allergen risk

Panthenol

Panthenol (vitamin B5) at 1–5%; moisturizing and reparative, supports barrier recovery

Azelaic Acid

Acne and pigment agent; 15-20% can be irritating, needs controlled release or lower doses.

Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract

Green tea extract for antioxidant/astringent; contains caffeine, possible irritation in sensitive skin.

Faex Extract

Yeast extract rich in amino acids and B-vitamins; aids repair and hydration, monitor for fungal sensitivity.

Zinc Gluconate

Chelated zinc salt with antimicrobial and deodorizing effects; used in antiperspirants and oral care; has EU concentration limit.

Caffeine

Active ingredient, 0.1–2%; promotes circulation, irritation risk at high concentration.

Biotin

Vitamin B7 nutrient claimant; topical effect limited, use at 1-20 ppm.

Sodium cocoamphoacetate

Mild amphoteric surfactant at 0.5–5%; low irritation, suitable for sensitive skin, often paired with anionics.

Bambusa Vulgaris Shoot Extract

Bamboo shoot extract for humectancy/antioxidant; plant-sourced, monitor batch stability, low allergen risk

Sodium Hyaluronate

Potent humectant at 0.1–2%; different MW for penetration depth, high levels may draw moisture

Mandelic acid

Alpha-hydroxy acid for exfoliation and antibacterial effects; mild penetration, less photosensitivity than other AHAs

Niacinamide

Niacinamide at 2–5%; improves texture, controls oil, brightens; high levels may cause sensitivity

Betaine

Betaine for mild moisturizing/surfactant; low concentration 1-2% common, high may irritate.

Malpighia Punicifolia Fruit Extract

Natural extract providing antioxidant activity; used as functional ingredient at low levels.

Sodium Lactate

Sodium lactate for moisturizing and exfoliation; pH buffering agent

Sodium chloride

Salt for gel viscosity control; used as precipitant in soaps

Allantoin

Skin soother at 0.5-2%; promotes cell regeneration

Urea

Potent humectant and keratolytic, >10% has exfoliating effect; stinging sensation at high levels, sensitive skin caution

Maltose

Maltose humectant/skin conditioner; low sweetness, masking; monitor microbial growth.

Glucose

Low-MW humectant and buffer; high hygroscopicity requires careful preservation and humidity control.

Sodium Hydroxide

Strong base neutralizer for pH adjustment; handle with extreme care

Sodium PCA

Sodium PCA, NMF component, 1-10% humectant; salty/tacky at high levels.

Trehalose

Trehalose; mild humectant and stabilizer for proteins/actives; hygroscopic, light skin feel.

Tocopheryl Acetate

Vitamin E derivative antioxidant at 0.1–1%; more stable than tocopherol, store protected from light

Citric Acid

Buffer and chelator at 0.1–2%; adjusts pH, may irritate sensitive skin at low pH

Fructose

Strong humectant; high levels can increase viscosity and hygroscopicity.

PEG-12 Dimethicone

Water-soluble silicone; provides slip and gloss, easily emulsified, common in hair and skin care.

Polysorbate 20
