Hordeum Vulgare Extract

Barley extract with beta-glucans/amino acids, moisturizing/soothing at 1–5%; watch for microbial growth.

Tocopherol

Natural antioxidant (vitamin E) at 0.1–1%; prone to oxidation, store protected from light

Phenoxyethanol

Broad-spectrum preservative at ≤1%; may irritate sensitive eye areas, often paired with ethylhexylglycerin

Hydrogenated Polydecene

Hydrogenated polydecene, light mineral oil alternative, low comedogenic; silky, non-greasy.

Ethylhexylglycerin

Mild conditioner and preservative booster at 0.5–1%; reduces preservative load, smooth feel

Butylene Glycol

Polyol humectant and solvent at 1–5%; aids solubilization, light feel

Alcohol

Ethanol for solubility/drying at 5-15%; high conc. is drying/irritating, avoid lip/eye, low residue, balance with humectants.

Hydroxyethylcellulose

Water-soluble cellulose ether for thickening and suspension stabilization; sensitive to ions, electrolytes reduce viscosity, use at pH 7-8.

Parfum

Fragrance for scent; may contain allergens, caution for sensitive skin, full labeling required.

Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate

Gluconate diacetate tetrasodium chelator; replaces EDTA, improves stability against metals

Sodium Lactate

Sodium lactate for moisturizing and exfoliation; pH buffering agent

Carbomer

Vitamin C, potent antioxidant requiring acidic environment for stability; oxidizes and discolors easily, needs light and air protection, concentration 1-10%, pure L-ascorbic acid is more irritating.

Sodium Hydroxide

Strong base neutralizer for pH adjustment; handle with extreme care

Benzoic Acid

Preservative and pH adjuster at 0.1–0.5%; low water solubility, best in acidic media, irritant at high levels.

Sorbic Acid

Preservative effective at low pH, often combined with sorbate salts; check regulatory limits
