- Solvent, main base; microbial control is critical
- Alcohol Denat
- Denatured ethanol; solvent, penetration enhancer, and quick-dry agent; high % may compromise barrier in dry skin.
- Isopentyldiol
- Solvent at 1–10%; helps dissolve actives, fresh feel
- Niacinamide
- Niacinamide at 2–5%; improves texture, controls oil, brightens; high levels may cause sensitivity
- Azelaic Acid
- Acne and pigment agent; 15-20% can be irritating, needs controlled release or lower doses.
- Salicylic Acid
- Lipophilic BHA at 0.5-2%; exfoliant/sebum control, irritation/sensitization at high conc., photosensitivity (SPF needed), avoid sensitive/pregnant.
- Octadecenedioic Acid
- Unsaturated dicarboxylic acid for thickening and rheology; used as gel or emulsion thickener, low irritation
- Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6
- Water-soluble thickener; requires neutralizer, performs best at pH 5–7
- Glycerin
- Workhorse humectant at 3–10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives
- Phenoxyethanol
- Broad-spectrum preservative at ≤1%; may irritate sensitive eye areas, often paired with ethylhexylglycerin
