- Humectant amino acid, 1–3%; small molecule, low irritation.
- Fructose
- Strong humectant; high levels can increase viscosity and hygroscopicity.
- Urea
- Potent humectant and keratolytic, >10% has exfoliating effect; stinging sensation at high levels, sensitive skin caution
- Inositol
- Humectant at 0.5–2%; gentle moisturizing, suitable for sensitive skin
- Sodium Benzoate
- Preservative booster, effective below pH 4.5; combinable with sorbates
- Lactic Acid
- AHA pH adjuster at 0.5-5%; exfoliation/humectancy, mild at low conc., irritating at high, avoid conflict with alkaline preservatives.
- Arginine
- Arginine for moisturizing/conditioning; amino acid, high biocompatibility, often used in blends.
- Allantoin
- Skin soother at 0.5-2%; promotes cell regeneration
- Tocopheryl Acetate
- Vitamin E derivative antioxidant at 0.1–1%; more stable than tocopherol, store protected from light
- Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer
- Crosspolymer for thickening/film; needs neutralization to pH 7-8 to hydrate, check ion strength.
- Parfum
- Fragrance for scent; may contain allergens, caution for sensitive skin, full labeling required.
- Xanthan Gum
- Natural thickener at 0.1–1%; provides gel texture, pH-stable, requires full hydration
- Beta-Carotene
- Beta-carotene for color and antioxidants; oil-soluble, protect from oxidation and color change.
- Disodium EDTA
- Chelating agent at 0.05–0.5%; sequesters metal ions for stability, boosts preservative efficacy
- Sodium Hyaluronate
- Potent humectant at 0.1–2%; different MW for penetration depth, high levels may draw moisture
