Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer

Cationic polymer providing suspension, thickening, and conditioning; often paired with anionic thickening systems, low usage, imparts slip.

Hydrogenated Rice Bran Oil

Plant oil for hair and skin conditioning; high emolliency, moderate comedogenicity

Hydrogenated Lecithin

Emulsifier from lecithin; stable, used in powder emulsions

Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate

Non-ionic emulsifier at 1–3%; mild, easily combined with other surfactants.

Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6

Water-soluble thickener; requires neutralizer, performs best at pH 5–7

Mannitol

Polyol humectant with binding/skin conditioning properties; high levels may cause osmotic irritation

Cetyl-PG Hydroxyethyl Palmitamide

Amide emollient for skin feel; contains PEG, acts as penetration enhancer.

Stearic Acid

Fatty acid emulsifier, white waxy solid; adds slip feel

Ethylhexylglycerin

Mild conditioner and preservative booster at 0.5–1%; reduces preservative load, smooth feel

Glyceryl Caprylate

Mild emulsifier/deodorant at 0.5-2%; polyol ester, high humectancy, low irritancy, check cationic surfactant compatibility.

Propanediol

Polyol solvent at 1–5%; light feel, aids solubilization, propylene glycol alternative

Glyceryl Stearate

Emulsifier at 1-3%; may require acid to prevent saponification

Sodium Metaphosphate

Sodium metaphosphate; buffer and chelating agent; good water solubility, strongly alkaline, precise dosing required

Ceramide NP

Ceramide N3 for barrier repair; lipophilic, needs oil phase or emulsion, avoid high standalone use.

Carbomer

Gelling thickener requiring neutralization; watch out for ion compatibility

Palmitic Acid

Palmitic acid for emulsification/emollient; solid fat, high melting point, occlusive.

Silica

Silica powder at 1–10%; absorbs oil, thickens, provides matte finish, for oil-control products

Zinc Chloride

Antimicrobial astringent for oral care; usage levels are restricted.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol; barrier repair lipid mimicking stratum corneum; often blended with ceramides, plant or fermentation source.

Beta-Glucan

Polysaccharide for soothing and hydration; high MW acts on the surface, poor penetration into deep dermis.

Sphingolipids

Biomimetic membrane lipids for repairing skin barrier and stratum corneum; highly effective for barrier impairment

Sodium Hyaluronate

Potent humectant at 0.1–2%; different MW for penetration depth, high levels may draw moisture

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose

High polymer for thickening and film formation; water-soluble, used in physical sunscreens or gels, tacky at high levels

Myristic Acid

Saturated fatty acid, saponification feedstock; insoluble alone, pairs with stearic acid.

Propylene Glycol

Polyol humectant at 3-10%; hygroscopic, slight tackiness, mild irritation at high conc., verify preservative efficacy, no allergen.

Lauric Acid

Lauric acid for cleansing and emulsification; high comedogenic rating, recommend limiting to 1-2% or combining with other acids.

Tocopherol

Natural antioxidant (vitamin E) at 0.1–1%; prone to oxidation, store protected from light
