Ingredients explained

Water
Primary solvent and base; requires preservative system to prevent microbial growth
Propylene Glycol
Polyol humectant at 3-10%; hygroscopic, slight tackiness, mild irritation at high conc., verify preservative efficacy, no allergen.
Azelaic Acid
Acne and pigment agent; 15-20% can be irritating, needs controlled release or lower doses.
Sodium Hydroxide
Strong base neutralizer for pH adjustment; handle with extreme care
1,2-Hexanediol
Polyol solvent and preservative booster at 1–5%; light feel, can replace some traditional preservatives
Glycerin
Workhorse humectant at 3–10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives
Methylpropanediol
Diol solvent and extraction carrier; enhances solubility of actives, low irritation profile.
Propanediol
Polyol solvent at 1–5%; light feel, aids solubilization, propylene glycol alternative
Betaine
Betaine for mild moisturizing/surfactant; low concentration 1-2% common, high may irritate.
Hydroxyethylcellulose
Water-soluble cellulose ether for thickening and suspension stabilization; sensitive to ions, electrolytes reduce viscosity, use at pH 7-8.
Panthenol
Panthenol (vitamin B5) at 1–5%; moisturizing and reparative, supports barrier recovery
Succinic Acid
Dicarboxylic acid used as a buffer and natural metabolite; slight flavoring effect, low irritation
Chondrus Crispus Extract
Carrageenan for thickening and moisturizing; seaweed-based, pH-sensitive
Saccharum Officinarum Extract
Sugarcane extract, mainly moisturizing and conditioning; use at low levels; prone to microbes, needs preservatives.
Allantoin
Skin soother at 0.5-2%; promotes cell regeneration
Ethylhexylglycerin
Mild conditioner and preservative booster at 0.5–1%; reduces preservative load, smooth feel
Beta-Glucan
Polysaccharide for soothing and hydration; high MW acts on the surface, poor penetration into deep dermis.
Epigallocatechin Gallate
Potent water-soluble polyphenol antioxidant <1%; may affect color stability
Tocopherol
Natural antioxidant (vitamin E) at 0.1–1%; prone to oxidation, store protected from light
Arginine
Arginine for moisturizing/conditioning; amino acid, high biocompatibility, often used in blends.
Capryloyl Salicylic Acid
Oil-soluble salicylic acid derivative for gentle pore unclogging; milder than BHA, suitable for daily acne care.
Butylene Glycol
Polyol humectant and solvent at 1–5%; aids solubilization, light feel
Honokiol
Magnolol, a natural phenol; offers antioxidant and whitening effects; can be mildly irritating at high concentrations.
