- Salicylic Acid
- Lipophilic BHA at 0.5-2%; exfoliant/sebum control, irritation/sensitization at high conc., photosensitivity (SPF needed), avoid sensitive/pregnant.
- Kojic Acid
- Tyrosinase inhibitor for whitening; EU limit 1% in water, unstable and requires light protection, potential irritation.
- Glycolic Acid
- Glycolic acid for exfoliation; requires buffering at concentrations >10%, avoid combination with other acids.
- Niacinamide
- Niacinamide at 2–5%; improves texture, controls oil, brightens; high levels may cause sensitivity
- Glutathione
- Antioxidant and brightening agent; unstable, requires antioxidants and protection from light.
- Ferulic Acid
- Antioxidant, often combined with vitamin C and E; 0.5-2%, photolabile
- MSM
- Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), organic sulfur compound. Used for skin conditioning/antioxidant; some evidence for joint health, low topical irritation.
