Sorbitol

Ceramide NP

Ceramide N3 for barrier repair; lipophilic, needs oil phase or emulsion, avoid high standalone use.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol; barrier repair lipid mimicking stratum corneum; often blended with ceramides, plant or fermentation source.

Phytosphingosine

Phytosphingosine barrier repair ingredient, 0.1–1%; water-soluble, good for dry skin.

Lactobacillus Ferment

Probiotic ferment filtrate for conditioning; complex mix, check allergens and preservative residues

Bifida Ferment Filtrate

Ferment filtrate with prebiotics/metabolites for conditioning; high sterility requirements.

Stearic Acid

Fatty acid emulsifier, white waxy solid; adds slip feel

Caprylyl Glycol

Oleic Acid

Oleic acid for emolliency/emulsification; high levels may increase skin penetration

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

Hydrogenated Lecithin

Emulsifier from lecithin; stable, used in powder emulsions

Allantoin

Skin soother at 0.5-2%; promotes cell regeneration

Panthenol

Panthenol (vitamin B5) at 1–5%; moisturizing and reparative, supports barrier recovery

Lactic Acid

AHA pH adjuster at 0.5-5%; exfoliation/humectancy, mild at low conc., irritating at high, avoid conflict with alkaline preservatives.

Betaine

Betaine for mild moisturizing/surfactant; low concentration 1-2% common, high may irritate.

Hydroxyethylcellulose

Water-soluble cellulose ether for thickening and suspension stabilization; sensitive to ions, electrolytes reduce viscosity, use at pH 7-8.

Hydroxyacetophenone

Hydroxyacetophenone as antioxidant; often boosts Vitamin C, works in acidic pH.

1,2-Hexanediol

Polyol solvent and preservative booster at 1–5%; light feel, can replace some traditional preservatives

Caprylhydroxamic Acid

Chelating agent to stabilize metal ions; often paired with antioxidants for system stability, used at low levels
