Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth for oil absorption/opacification at 1–5%; high surface area, handle dust carefully.

Jojoba Esters

Jojoba esters, light emollient ester, low comedogenic; sebum-like, excellent spreadability.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

Light occlusive and solvent at 1–10%; non-greasy feel, suitable for oily and combination skin

Behenyl Alcohol

Fat alcohol emulsifier/thickener at 1-3%; low comedogenic risk, check solubility in strong acid/base systems, add antioxidants.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide at 2–5%; improves texture, controls oil, brightens; high levels may cause sensitivity

Kaolin

Kaolin absorbent and bulk for powders/masks; check for heavy metals and comply with EU colorant limits IV/119

Salicylic Acid

Lipophilic BHA at 0.5-2%; exfoliant/sebum control, irritation/sensitization at high conc., photosensitivity (SPF needed), avoid sensitive/pregnant.

Dicaprylyl Ether

Lightweight diester solvent and emollient, non-greasy feel; common oil phase carrier; low irritation.

Mandelic Acid

Alpha-hydroxy acid for exfoliation and antibacterial effects; mild penetration, less photosensitivity than other AHAs

Stearic Acid

Fatty acid emulsifier, white waxy solid; adds slip feel

Sucrose Stearate

Succrose ester emulsifier/emolient with cleansing properties; HLB determines emulsion type.

Cetyl Alcohol

Cetyl alcohol for emulsification/thickening; high concentration >10% may irritate.

Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate

Mild amino-acid surfactant, poor solubility, pairs with fatty alcohols, fine foam.

Glycol Distearate

Glycol distearate for thickening and emulsification; non-ionic, improves viscosity
