Primary solvent and base; requires preservative system to prevent microbial growth
Urea
Potent humectant and keratolytic, >10% has exfoliating effect; stinging sensation at high levels, sensitive skin caution
Lanolin
Wool-derived lipid, excellent occlusive emollient; high sensitization rate (wool alcohols), caution for sensitive skin.
Cetearyl Alcohol
Fatty alcohol emulsifier at 1-5%; non-ionic surfactant
PEG-20 Stearate
PEG-20 stearate emulsifier/cleanser, 0.5–2%; PEG-class potential allergen/dioxane residue risk.
Glyceryl Stearate
Emulsifier at 1-3%; may require acid to prevent saponification
Decyl Oleate
Decyl oleate, light ester emollient and solubilizer; refreshing feel, low comedogenicity, suitable for most skin types.
Mineral Oil
Occlusive emollient preventing water loss; must use high-purity medical grade to avoid impurities.
Glycerine
Workhorse humectant at 3-10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives, low irritancy.
Dimethicone
Silicone occlusive at 1–5%; provides smooth feel, non-penetrating, suitable for sensitive skin
Phenoxyethanol
Broad-spectrum preservative at ≤1%; may irritate sensitive eye areas, often paired with ethylhexylglycerin
Benzyl Alcohol
Mild preservative/solvent at 0.5-1.0%; EU allergen (labeling required), irritation risk if concentrated, avoid in infant/highly sensitive skin.
Butyrospermum Parkii
African oil/fat/wax; clarify form (oil, butter, or powder) as function depends on it.
Sodium PCA
Sodium PCA, NMF component, 1-10% humectant; salty/tacky at high levels.
Allantoin
Skin soother at 0.5-2%; promotes cell regeneration
Panthenol
Panthenol (vitamin B5) at 1–5%; moisturizing and reparative, supports barrier recovery
Aloe Vera Gel
Botanical-based moisturizer, soothes irritation; contains aloesin, sensitive skin needs careful testing
Tocopheryl Acetate
Vitamin E derivative antioxidant at 0.1–1%; more stable than tocopherol, store protected from light
Parfum
Fragrance for scent; may contain allergens, caution for sensitive skin, full labeling required.
Arginine
Arginine for moisturizing/conditioning; amino acid, high biocompatibility, often used in blends.
