Dimethicone

Silicone occlusive at 1–5%; provides smooth feel, non-penetrating, suitable for sensitive skin

Isododecane

Synthetic hydrocarbon solvent providing dry, silky skin feel; high volatility, non-comedogenic, common in sunscreens and foundations, usage 5-30%.

Glycerin

Workhorse humectant at 3–10%; tacky at high levels, pair with occlusives

Silica

Silica powder at 1–10%; absorbs oil, thickens, provides matte finish, for oil-control products

PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone

PEG-modified silicone with emulsifying and conditioning properties; ensure low dioxane levels in finished goods.

Butylene Glycol

Polyol humectant and solvent at 1–5%; aids solubilization, light feel

Disteardimonium Hectorite

Inorganic ionic clay thickener at 0.25-1%; water/oil/solvent systems, rheology control, avoid strong acids, may affect active release.

Tribehenin

Waxy emollient providing slip; prone to oxidation, needs antioxidant system; good for dry skin.

Phenoxyethanol

Broad-spectrum preservative at ≤1%; may irritate sensitive eye areas, often paired with ethylhexylglycerin

Sodium Chloride

Salt for gel viscosity control; used as precipitant in soaps

Alcohol Denat

Denatured ethanol; solvent, penetration enhancer, and quick-dry agent; high % may compromise barrier in dry skin.

Caprylyl Glycol

Polyol conditioner and preservative booster at 0.5–3%; emollient feel, often paired with 1,2-hexanediol

Phenolic antimicrobial; strict EU limits apply, potential allergen, careful dosing required for leave-on products.

Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract

Astringent and soothing botanical extract for sensitive or pore care, used at low levels.

Tocopherol

Natural antioxidant (vitamin E) at 0.1–1%; prone to oxidation, store protected from light

Triethoxycaprylylsilane

Silane coupling agent at 0.1-0.5%; enhances inorganic filler adhesion, trace use, low toxicity, avoid direct contact with aqueous systems.

Trimethoxycaprylylsilane

Silane modifier for smoothing and binding; used as surface treatment or rheology modifier; low irritancy typically.

Talc

Inorganic mineral powder for texture and oil absorption; must be asbestos-free; fineness affects skin feel and safety, avoid inhalation.
